There is a tale out there about giant Louisiana spiders in the vicinity of Fort Polk, an American Army base, in the southern state of Louisiana, where it is hot and humid and the woods in some areas resemble tropical jungles, or at the very least, hot and humid forested areas.

Can these tales of massive arachnids actually be true?

Okay, so I came across a blogger who has ex-military contacts who swear to him that they encountered giant spiders in the forest of Louisiana while in the military around the year 2005.

Current science has it that the giant insects of the prehistoric past were possible because at that time, the Earth had much higher atmospheric oxygen levels that made it feasible for large insects to exist because their lung systems would require this in order to become that large.

The largest insect known by modern science would be in the realm of a spider, but while large, it falls WAY short of the size of the spiders in the Louisiana Army tale. There is a tarantula native to Cental South American jungles that grow to the size of a dinner plate, also known as the bird spider because it can take prey the size of birds and small mammals.

It is a well known scientific fact that insects were MUCH larger on Earth way back when the atmospheric Oxygen levels were at about 30%-35%. This was between 348 to 298 million years ago during the Carboniferous Period.  That’s a huge jump from today’s average of 20%. My point here is that spiders of this size are impossible in today’s atmosphere UNLESS they have evolved some way to grow that size, or if they’ve somehow been engineered that way and escaped.

You can read all about the respiratory systems of some spiders here. It’s scientific jargon but they have some fascinating pictures and diagrams on how these things breath.

The spiders in the article (2) that I am pointing to are simply, massive to the point of you having to doubt it unless real proof can be provided.

I’ll hand it to the author of the other blog article, he spins a fascinating story intertwined with alleged witness quotes, and then surmises on the possibility of these spiders, if they really exist, having to had to evolve some sort of mutated breathing apparatus in order to grow to such sizes in the modern Earth atmosphere.

It’s pretty troubling to imagine a mega-sized spider, especially since they are such effective predators. Think about it. Spiders have multiple eyes, sharp fangs, they all have some sort of venom, and they use webs and trap doors to ensnare prey. Spiders are quick, and they can climb all sorts of surfaces.

If there really is a super-sized (as in larger than a human or the size of a small car), God help you if it decides to make you prey.

Another very troubling observation of these is that they apparently use a liquid spray of some sort to mark potential prey in order to track that prey down later, like laying a scent tracker. The alleged witness says that he felt a liquid sprayed at him as he was running from one of these things and that he thinks it enabled the spider to track him down later. He claims a musty type smell that other people could detect on him.

Another not too comfortable observation was that one was seen to have been carrying some sort of care package wrapped in a ball of web, perhaps a spider version of “meals on wheels”, which would be an already envenomated and wrapped prey item, perhaps a small mammal or something.

There are plenty of missing person cases around forest areas, and while you can usually write that off to things like bears, large cats, or reptiles of the alligator or snake kind, wouldn’t it be in the realm of pure horror to now worry about giant spiders roaming some of America’s wilderness areas?

It’s like a real-life version of that campy giant spider movie, “Eight Legged Creeps”.

One thing about all of this stuff, whether bigfoot or giant spiders, is that Mother Nature should NEVER be underestimated. As Jeff Goldblum’s character in Jurassic Park says, “life, uh, finds a way”.

Whatcha think about all this?
